Popular iOS note taking app Notability comes to Mac

Notability 1.0 on Mac - Notes on all devices

Popular iOS note taking app Notability is today making its way to the Mac, allowing users to seamlessly switch between platforms with notes synced via iCloud.

The Mac app has been designed specifically for the desktop but features a familiar look and feel to users of the mobile apps. It also features automatic Dropbox and Google Drive backups, keyboard shortcuts, and other new features to optimize the experience for OS X.

In addition, you’ll find all the handwriting, audio recording, note replay, organization, and sharing features from the iPhone and iPad version.

Notability is optimized for Mac
– Quickly create notes by dragging documents, photos, or audio recordings from the desktop and dropping onto the library.
– Enhance notes by dragging photos, audio recordings, and PDFs from the desktop and dropping onto a note.
– Get more done with smart keyboard shortcuts.
– Handwriting and sketches can be scaled, transformed, free and constrained rotated, nudged (with arrow keys), and restyled.
– Notes look the same on Mac, iPad, and iPhone

Notability for Mac is available on the Mac App Store now for $10. The iOS version of the app for iPhone and iPad sells for $2.99

Would love to do it but at $9.99 I will stick to the free ones like Evernote and Microsoft notes.

    • Neither Evernote nor MS Notes are free. MS Notes requires $15 after 500 notes and Evernote requires a $40 a /year subscription to do less than Notability, such as handwritten notes and searching within your notes.

OneNote is free without any limitations. I believe you’re recalling the previous version of OneNote before MS went all free this year.

I bought notability for my iPad and it was just as rough trying to take notes as any of the other note taking apps. It was terrible to write with my Wacom Bamboo stylus and my Adonit Jot Pro. The folder functionality is nice, but every note taking app’s idea of how to deal with palm rejection has been abysmal. Notes Plus has the same functionality as this app but I think Notability has a nicer interface.

Yesss!!! I am extremely happy about this move! I have been wanting this function for the longest time. I will gladly pay them for the app especially for how great the app works!

  4. Love the iPad app and was about to download this one then I notice the $10 price tag… at $2 – $5 it would be an easy decision, at $10 I have to think how much I would use it especially without a Windows Version.

I understand (and am probably in the same boat), but I think $10 (or even a bit more) is the correct pricing decision.

      • For me, this is an app I may use 1-2 times a week because I can only use it on my iPad / iPhone. While at work I have to use a Windows PC so for taking quick notes I rely on Evernote since I can get to those notes later on my MacBook / iPad / iPhone or web browser.

If Notability had a web app and Windows app I would spend more than $10 for that. I would love Evernote’s cross platform and syncing functionality with the Notability UI and features.

“Notes look the same on Mac, iPad, and iPhone”

Not quite. In my experience, notes taken on an iPhone are rendered in a grotesquely large font on an iPad, while notes taken on an iPad are rendered in a miniscule font on an iPhone. The Notability folk attribute this to “the nature of different devices.” It might be noted (no pun intended) that Evernote does not suffer this rendering problem.

  6. Hi guys see the screenshot of OS X Yosemite( upcoming MAC OS) and along with that if you notice carefully, there is full screen arrow in the right top corner of that notability app. However, Apple has said that they are doing away with that full screen arrow button and instead will opt for the much simpler maximise button. Now first of all I have two doubts being a Notability customer on iOS platform. Will the notability app look and feel great as in Yosemite(they have depicted) or the entire screenshot is a artist concept and not a real one. Please do reply to my concern. @9to5mac please help me

In Yosemite, the full-screen mode is indeed activated with the green “maximize” button on the top left corner of the window. No Mavericks-style arrows.
